Birth, aging, illness, and death are always unavoidable topics in life. Today, let's talk about how to obtain a birth certificate for a child in Singapore, and what procedures should be followed if they want to take it back to another country for use?

How to Obtain a Birth Certificate in Singapore?

Singapore can obtain an electronic version of the birth certificate by registering for birth online. Parents or legal guardians must fill in the birth registration information through the LifeSG app within 42 days of the baby's birth, and then download the electronic birth certificate from the e-Service online system of the immigration bureau within 90 days.

Process for Obtaining a Birth Certificate

1)  After the baby is born, download the LifeSG app;

2)  Log in, register the newborn, and complete the registration process;

3)  Obtain notification to download electronic birth certificate;

4)  Download the birth certificate from the immigration website (go. gov.sg/ica download-edc) within 90 days.

Precautions for Downloading Birth Certificate

1)  If logging in using Singpass, enter the child's date of birth;

2)  If it is not Singpass login, enter the mother's ID number, password (can be found in the download notice) and the child's birth date;

3)  Click to download and save to personal electronic device;

4)  If you need a paper version, just print it out.

5)  Parents or legal guardians need to pay a registration fee of $18 to obtain an electronic birth certificate.

How to Notarize/Authenticate a Birth Certificate?

A birth certificate is an official document issued by the Singapore government department. If it is to be used in other countries, it does not need to be notarized. You can directly apply for an additional certificate from the Singapore Law Society, which is commonly known as Apostille Certification.
